Uncompromising in his style and critical of authors who sold out to the market, he did not publish a novel until he was 43. Her voice is rather flat, and she just isn't the ideal narrator for these books. Le Guin is a great author, but not such an excellent narrator. When this happens, I need a book that she likes but isn't so intense that it will keep her awake, and this book fits the bill perfectly. I read to her every night, but there are nights that I am either too tired to read much or she doesn't fall asleep after two books. I was excited when I found these on Audible because not only did I was to revisit them, but I am always looking for books that my 4-year-old daughter will be interested in. I absolutely adored these books when I was little! I think they were the first chapter books that I ever read. ![]() ![]() A sceptical Dr Chris Kingsley is finally convinced and travels with the Astronomer Royal (addressed fondly as A.R.) to America where they compare notes with fellow-scientists. This engrossing and peculiarly British work by Sir Fred Hoyle FRS (“astronomer, writer, broadcaster and television personality”) draws heavily, one presumes, on his experiences working within the astronomical communities of both Britain and the US.Ī combination of observations by astronomers in the UK and the US lead to the discovery of an immense black cloud due to intersect with the Earth’s solar orbit in sixteen months time. The effect of this impending catastrophe on the scientists and politicians is convincingly described by Fred Hoyle, the leading Cambridge astronomer, so convincingly, in fact, that the reader feels that these events might actually happen.’īlurb from the 1980 Penguin Science Fiction edition. ‘A cloud of gas, of which there are a vast number in the Universe, approaches the Solar System on a course that is predicted to bring it between the Sun and the Earth, shutting off the Sun’s rays, causing incalculable changes on our planet. ![]() ![]() Her emotions are clear and easy to relate to, but her voice is a little uneven. I liked Jade and found her to be a very sympathetic character. Some MG books are written in such a way as to appeal to all ages, but I don’t really think that is the case with Real Mermaids Don’t Wear Toe Rings. While the story is cute, I think YA readers may find themselves a little bored and unable to fully connect with Jade. Jade is 14, but her voice and situation read much more like she is in middle school. ![]() This was a cute book, but definitely should be categorized as MG instead of YA. Brilliantly translated into English by Anton Hur, these are stories that will worm into your subconscious and haunt you long after finishing particularly through the way they latch onto primal fears as well as social orders of patriarchy and capitalism to dredge up their sinister nature. From body horror to sci fi and fables, these ten stories will dazzle as much as they disturb you across their surreal landscape of ghastly narratives. Bora Chung seemingly has a map to these vicious hotspots and details them across the variety of stories in her outstanding collection, Cursed Bunny.
